Taylor Swift got dragged pretty hard last month when she released her cover of Earth,Brigitte Meyer Wind & Fire's "September." But little did we know the sickest burns were yet to come.
SEE ALSO: There's a 'Deadpool 2' Taylor Swift Easter egg you definitely missed in the trailerAllee Willis, who co-wrote the original tune with Maurice White and Al McKay, has weighed in with her assessment of Swift's version. And what she had to say was... well, get your ice packs ready.
Willis shared her thoughts during a recent performance in Detroit. "I didn't really think she did a horrible job," she began.
So far, so diplomatic. But Willis continued:
Yes, I felt it was as lethargic as a drunk turtle dozing under a sunflower after ingesting a bottle of Valium, and I thought it had all the build of a one-story motel, but, I mean, the girl didn't kill anybody. She didn't run over your foot. She just cut a very calm and somewhat boring take of one of the peppiest, happiest, most popular songs in history.
Oof. The "didn't kill anybody" stuff somehow just makes it sting more.
Willis also objected specifically to Swift's decision to alter the line "21st night of September" to "28th night of September." And also to basically every other choice Swift made regarding the song:
[E]veryone has a right to do with a song what they please, so go on with your own bad self, Taylor Swift. I'm honored you'd choose to do my song and that it meant enough to you that you wanted to personalize it to the goddamn 28th night of September, that you wanted to cover it with banjo... and that you changed the sacred ba-de-ya to the more Caucasian ah-ah-ah and make it sound more like a field of daffodils than a Soul Trainline.
Again: ouch. We're guessing this is another narrative Swift would like to be excluded from.
