This week: Kevin’s true love is melienia monrroe the erotice reviewrevealed (and it’s not his mirror), Kate goes to fat camp and remembers Jack’s funeral (gasp!) and William learns to drive.
As Dan Fogelman and the show’s writers continue to slowly dole out morsels of info, we’re seeing the seeds of the Big Three’s personal joys and pains and we wince in empathy at how painful those moments can be because we’ve all been there.
The Tale of Three Birthday PartiesTen year old Kevin, Kate and Randall want their own birthday parties this year instead of sharing one party; Kevin wants a “Princess Bride” theme party, Kate wants a Madonna theme and Randall wants a magician. Jack wants to have another kid and when he tells Rebecca that, she shuts it DOWN. At the birthday parties, with forty kids running around their house, it’s Jack and Rebecca who learn a lot about their fast-growing kids. Jack learns that Kevin’s in love with Kate’s best friend Sophie. He also sees a sad Kate, frustrated by the fact that her friends seem to like Kevin better. Rebecca learns just how cool Randall is when only a few kids from his class show up for his party; he teaches her that having a few close friends is better than the whole class showing up because they have to. Young Randall is the best. We totally get how he grew up to be Sterling K. Brown. The kid is as cool as the other side of the pillow.
As usual, we see heart-tugging moments with Jack and Kate (we’re still replaying the scene of her teaching him to vogue) and reinforcing how much she loves her dad. What’s even more striking is Jack’s frustration that he can’t cheer her up the way he used to when she was young as childhood is slipping away faster than either of them can handle. Kate’s “Immersive Weight Loss Experience”Kate’s about to schedule her gastric bypass procedure but can’t deal with the thought of going through another surgery after Toby’s recent heart surgery. Her doctor suggests an “immersive weight loss experience” aka fat camp. Shortly after arriving at the camp, a guy who works at the stable vaguely hits on her. When she sees him after trying to meditate in a class, he coarsely tells Kate the camp is worthless, a joke. She says people trying to change their lives isn’t a joke. In a drum class, Kate’s painful memories flood her brain, including Jack’s funeral, and we see the Big Three were teenagers when Jack died. Kate screams in drum class and we feel her pain. Stable guy hits on Kate again and he goes full-on, telling her she’s sexy and that “this is happening.” Whoa, step off buddy! The lady’s engaged! A rattled Kate says, “No, it’s not.” Could stable guy be competition for Toby? We question this choice and are inclined to say “Nope!” Kevin Follows His HeartKevin got the biggest “What the what?!” moment this week as we found out a) he’s been married, b) he’s still in love with his ex-wife and, c) his ex was Sophie, Kate’s best friend when they were kids. This was a stylishly executed reveal as we saw Sophie in the birthday party scenes but didn’t know who she was 'til late in the episode when ten-year-old Kevin told his dad, “I love her.” As for grown-up Kevin, we swooned when we saw that he can speak from the heart in the clinch (the three sentences the episode title refers to, which turn out to be more than three sentences if we count punctuation,) and that he’s more than just a beautiful six-pack of abs. Can he win Sophie back? She didn’t invite him in when he showed up at her door to plead his case, but with Toby as his romance advisor, it’s a good bet we’ll see a grand gesture in an upcoming episode.Meanwhile, Randall is High on LifeWilliam is feeling reallygood now that he stopped chemo treatments and he surprises Randall by showing up at his office and asking him to go to lunch. Randall’s stressed out by a new guy vying for a project Randall wants but goes with William anyway. They have lunch, do a little shopping, chat a bit and then William asks to drive Randall’s car. Randall’s surprised to learn that William never learned to drive so he teaches his dad to drive in a parking lot. Role reversals are fun and the father-son bonding continued. While this story didn’t carry a lot of weight, it was a relief to see William with so much energy, lightness and jokes. Here’s hoping the Grim Reaper waits awhile before coming to fetch him. Punches in the feels: A solid five. The brief flashback to Jack’s funeral counts for two punches. The Kate and Kevin moments – one punch each. Rebecca realizing how cool a kid Randall is – one punch.
