Thor: Ragnarok had a pretty downer ending for such an upbeat film,Indonesia and Avengers: Infinity War doesn't look much cheerier.
Marvel's mighty box office smash ended with Asgard obliterated and its surviving citizens crammed onto a stolen spaceship, headed toward Earth and an uncertain (if hopeful) future -- until an ominous looking vessel loomed overhead in a post-credits scene.
SEE ALSO: Here's everything you missed from the 'Avengers: Infinity War' trailerIt doesn't take a nuclear physicist with seven PhDs to surmise that said loomer is probably Thanos, which is bad news for the embattled Asgardians -- especially if these scenes in the new Infinity War trailer are anything to go by.
The firstInfinity War footage from D23 saw Thor floating in space before splatting on the Milano's windshield like a bug, while the trailer simply shows a grumpy and disheveled God of Thunder asking who the hell Star Lord and his team are.
It's a pretty bad sign that Thor is clearly separated from his people and looking a little singed in the trailer, considering he was last seen with Hulk, Loki, Heimdall, and Ragnarok'sMVP Valkyrie on the Grandmaster's gigantic spacecraft. While Valkyrie is missing from the trailer but expected to appear in Infinity War(and Heimdall's status is unknown), we do get glimpses of Hulk and Loki in the new promo; although neither appearance is particularly reassuring for the remaining Asgardians.
SEE ALSO: There's a big 'Infinity War' clue hiding in this new Thor photoIn Ragnarok, Bruce Banner warned Thor that the next time he transformed into the Hulk, he might not be able to turn back -- so thisInfinity Warshot has at least some good news: Bruce is no longer big, green and mean, but judging from the damage he's left -- having smashed through a ceiling and several floors -- he fell from a pretty spectacular height.
Could he have literally fallen from space?
Seems unlikely, since Thor was just free-floating in the D23 footage, unless some kind of explosion (like a ship full of helpless civilians?) propelled him. Bruce also doesn't look quite as dirty as his mighty friend, which probably wouldn't be the case if he'd withstood the heat of reentering Earth's atmosphere without some kind of protection -- maybe he had to bail out of an escape pod because his Hulk form was weighing it down?
But the truly chilling moment in the trailer features Loki, his fabulous hair distressingly mussed, offering up the Tesseract to a taller foe. Seconds before that, we see unidentified legs wandering through a sea of bodies -- and the casualties all seem to be dressed in Asgardian robes, or the gladiatorial armor of the rebels who escaped Sakaar at the end of Ragnarok.
While some have assumed that these legs belong to Loki, the baggy pants and boot combo actually match one of Thanos' henchmen, Ebony Maw -- a member of the Black Order, aka "The Children of Thanos" -- whose look was revealed at D23. (He's the dude on Thanos' immediate right below.)

While it's easy to assume that Loki has once again double-crossed his brother and joined forces with Thanos, could this shot actually be the Trickster God's heroic moment? With Thor seemingly elsewhere and Ebony Maw potentially cutting a devastating path through the surviving Asgardians, maybe Loki offers up the Tesseract (and the Infinity Stone it contains) to try and stop the bloodshed and save as many of his adoptive people as he can? He certainly doesn't look happy -- or even fake-happy, as he was when he was hanging out with the Grandmaster -- to be handing over the weapon, despite the fact that he was firmly on Thanos' team in The Avengers.
SEE ALSO: Did you catch this awesome 'Civil War' easter egg hiding in the 'Avengers: Infinity War' trailer?Whether Loki's surrender is a betrayal of Thor or a long-con against Thanos, we see the Mad Titan wielding at least two of the Infinity Stones in his Gauntlet (the blue Space Stone from the Tesseract, and the purple Power Stone that the Guardians left with the Nova Corps) -- so it's no surprise that we also get a shot of what looks like Thor watching something explode outside the Milano's window.
Could it be the remnants of the refugee ship, or the planet-destroying effect of Thanos and his Children after they've gone after the Power Stone on Xandar? Either way, it seems like one ship managed to escape the carnage, by the looks of the glowing streak in the bottom right window.
As for what Thor's up to while Ebony Maw is mowing down his people? It's anyone's guess, since his big scene in the trailer is infuriatingly vague (but an admittedly great showcase for his biceps). There's something seemingly opening behind him -- doors, a gateway or some kind of reactor? -- and he's either trying to push it open or pull it closed in the center of a strange, circular contraption.
Did he sneak on to Thanos' ship to sabotage it, or is this a last-ditch effort to save his own? And will Infinity Warlead to a fresh start for the people of Asgard, or their virtual extinction?
We probably won't know for sure until Avengers: Infinity War lands in theaters on May 4, 2018, but we'll have a lot of fun speculating until then.
