Actress Uma Thruman,This Ain't Cops XXX (2010) best known for her roles in Harvey Weinstein-produced Quentin Tarantino films like Pulp Fictionand Kill Bill, is the latest focal point of the Weinstein scandal thanks to a new statement and resurfaced quotes from a Rolling Stoneinterview from 1989.

So I've been waiting to feel less angry."

But while the world waits to hear Thurman's comments on the current scandal, her thoughts from nearly 30 years on the topic of her experiences in Hollywood have resurfaced, as a 1989 interview in Rolling Stonemakes the rounds.
Published when Thurman was just 19 years old, the interview includes some telling quotes and anecdotes, like the one about being hit on by Sylvester Stallone.
"I was here last week at the same table," she says, after returning from her brief chat. "Sly Stallone was at the next table. He was with a woman, and as soon as she left to go to the ladies' room, he asked me for my phone number. I said I didn't have a phone. I kept putting him down. Finally I said, 'Look, I'll go skywriting and write my number in the sky.'"
There are other similar tidbits, like a "prominent director" approaching her during the interview and asking for her number so they could discuss a potential role.
Much is made of Thurman's relationship status and answering constant questions about possible trysts, including one about Robert Downey Jr. in which her attempt to correct the story wound up with the journalist who originally reported on the alleged affair asking her for a date.
There's also a lot of discussion about her looks. The profiled describes Thurman — who, again, had only just turned 19 when the feature was published — as "five eleven, blond, blue eyed and curvy."
Speaking to RSfor the piece, John Malkovich says of Thurman, "She has this Jayne Mansfield body and a horrifyingly great brain."
And Thurman herself addresses what those first flushes of fame felt like:
It's tough to be the hot girl of the moment, and Uma has little patience with the subject. "What did it say about me in Mademoiselle?" she exclaims. "'The thinking man's sex symbol'? I don't get off looking in the mirror. I don't get excited. It's just ridiculous. It's all for everybody else."
It's the closing quote of the story that drives this all home and makes a 28-year-old story especially relevant in the wake of the numerous sexual assault and harassment scandals that are dominating the entertainment industry.
Uma leaves the apartment for a trip to nearby Riverside Park. One of her favorite pastimes, she says, is feeding nuts to the squirrels and birds. After one toss, a squirrel tears into a nut with ferocious vigor. "People are like that too," Uma says. "Unfortunately, I'm the prey."
Thurman no doubt will eventually address the current scandals, and choosing the time and place to speak out is her right.
But her own words from nearly three decades ago show us how little has changed about the state of Hollywood's treatment of women.
